and then there were none

And Then There Were None is a crime mystery novel written by Agatha Christie. It was originally published in 1939 under the title “Ten Little Niggers”. The title which was offensive in the US was changed later when the novel was published there.

The novel is about ten people visiting an island and one by one getting murdered. Justice Wargrave – a retired judge, Vera Claythorne – a schoolteacher, Capt. Philip Lombard – a soldier of fortune, Emily Brent – an orthodox old woman,  General Macarthur – an ex-military man, Dr. Armstrong – a doctor, Tony Marston – a wealthy young man, Mr. Blore – a private detective and the Rogers couple – house servants are the major characters in the novel.

These ten people gather together in Soldier Island upon receiving an invitation from a person named U.N. Owen. Later, they gets killed in succession in accordance with a nursery rhyme. The rhyme mentioned in the novel is “Ten Little Niggers” written by Frank Green.

Agatha Christie has described this book as one of the most difficult ones she had written. It is one of the finest and most captivating crime thriller mysteries ever written and one the most widely read among Agatha Christie’s works.
